Every Thread Weaves a Story Worth Wearing
Our story
At Dress Your Best, our story is stitched together with care, creativity, and a deep dedication to the craft of sewing and tailoring.
Founded by Emily-Jane Curtis, what began as years of personal sewing projects and a passion for clothing design soon grew into a small business dedicated to serving the needs of our community.
Today, Dress Your Best has become a trusted destination for expert alterations and thoughtfully crafted custom garments.
We believe that every garment—and every person—is unique. That’s why each project is approached with precision, patience, and a personal touch. Whether it’s a simple hem, a detailed repair, or a full garment transformation, our goal is to ensure that your clothing fits beautifully and reflects your individual style.
In addition to alterations, we love helping clients bring their ideas to life through custom-made garments. From special occasion pieces to everyday clothing, each design is created with careful attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Sharing the joy of sewing is also at the heart of our work. Emily-Jane’s passion for the craft extends into our sewing classes, where beginners and experienced makers alike can learn new skills, build confidence, and explore their creativity in a welcoming environment.
At Dress Your Best, we’re more than just an alterations shop—we’re a place where garments are restored, ideas are created, and creativity is encouraged. We’re honored to help our clients look and feel their best, one stitch at a time.
How it Began
My journey into the world of sewing and garment creation has been one of curiosity, self-discovery, and a constant desire to learn. Long before I became involved in historical reenacting, my interest in sewing began with 4-H summer quilting and sewing classes. Those early experiences introduced me to the magic of fabric—how a simple piece of cloth could be shaped, stitched, and transformed into something meaningful. It was in those moments that I first discovered the deep satisfaction that comes from creating something with my own hands.
As a largely self-taught seamstress, much of my education has come through hands-on experience and countless hours spent studying the craft. Over the years, I’ve built a personal library filled with books on sewing techniques, pattern drafting, and the history of fashion. These resources remain some of my most trusted teachers, and I still turn to them regularly to refine my skills and deepen my understanding of garment construction.
In 2018, my involvement in historical reenacting opened an entirely new door. Immersing myself in the clothing of the past sparked a fascination with how garments were originally constructed and how they were tailored to fit the body. The pursuit of historical accuracy led me to study not only period styles, but also the techniques required to alter and adapt garments to achieve authentic silhouettes.
While books have been invaluable, my greatest lessons have come from experience. Every alteration, repair, and custom project has taught me something new—each seam and stitch adding to the knowledge and craftsmanship that I bring to Dress Your Best today.
Today, Dress Your Best is built on that same spirit of curiosity and craftsmanship. From modern alterations to historically inspired garments, each project is approached with care, precision, and respect for the art of sewing. Whether helping a client achieve the perfect fit, recreating a piece of history, or teaching someone their first stitches in a sewing class, my goal remains the same: to keep the tradition of sewing alive and help others experience the creativity and confidence that come from clothing made to fit beautifully.
